I don’t care for modern art.
As North is at once more articulate and better educated than I, I’ll let him describe why…

…but if I must use my own words:
Modern, secular art is mere soulless randomness, hostile to Truth, Beauty, and Divine Order.
The artists of the West totally and explicitly reject Christ.
Ergo, I totally and explicitly reject them.
But a note on Christian failure: I will grant that, while pre-20th century Christian art certainly holds her own against Islamic art of the same era, modern Islamic art leaves today’s sentimental, cliched Christian art far behind.
After, why spend the energy, pain, discipline and decades to truly master your calling when “Jesus is coming any minute now!”
Just one more sign of a victorious Shepherd, leading disobedient sheep who claim that the world belongs to Satan… leave the path Christ has blazed… and are swiftly torn apart by smiling lying friends with entirely too many teeth.
But obedience to Christ still leads to victory.
The fact that most of the sheep rebel against their Shepherd – and are promptly torn to pieces – should not strike fear in the hearts of obedient sheep. They need only fear the price of disobedience: so long as they stay the path, and follow The Way, The Truth, and the Light, they will win.
And not just in the afterlife, but in this life, in time and on earth.
[True, this does not guarantee prosperity and safety for individual believers: Christ carried His cross, and we must carry ours.
And – as believing Muslims will be quick to remind us
when it is expedient for them to do so,
a.k.a. when they have power over us
“All crosses bring pain, but some crosses are far more literal than others.”
But as a rule of thumb, the nation and people who obey God shall be blessed by God, with prosperity and safety and great honour.
And what nation is there so great, that hath statutes and judgments so righteous as all this law, which I set before you this day? — Deuteronomy 4:8
Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance. — Psalm 33:12
And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. — Micah 4:2
Today, Fujimura is the most successful serious artist of openly evangelical faith in the U.S., and probably in the world. His larger paintings sell for up to $400,000 and defy the secular art establishment’s unspoken commandment: Thou shalt not reward an artist who claims explicit Christian inspiration.
Well, perhaps. Certainly, no modern art studio or critic will cut any Christian artist an ounce of slack, or lift a finger to help him.
Kicking him hard in the nuts with steel-capped boots… for a good 15, 20 minutes, say… is definitely on the table.
(I like to call this “A Policy of Tolerance and Compassion” myself.
But you are free to come up with your own designation.)
Despite the hostility, though, any serious persevering Christian with the talent, the discipline, and the hardened resolve to rise to the top can still get there.
And this is what Makoto (“Mako”) Fujimura has done.
What does this mean?
It means that, if Christians want to win – as opposed to hide and weep and whine in tiny powerless shrinking ghettos – they can.
A certain nod of respect for Fujimora’s Japanese heritage, and even for the movie Silence itself.
Japanese culture is a beautiful culture, which I greatly admire: but make no mistake, at the heart of all that beauty and elegance is a lying, venomous snake.
A snake that hates Jesus Christ with great intensity.
Fortunately, the might and power of that snake, their God-Emperor, was crushed with an atomic fist. Satan really does lose over time, and his strongholds really do fall apart under sustained assault, and he really is losing territory and souls, as Jesus drives him back step by step…
…with precious little help from most Western churches, by the way.
This makes me wonder if there is another camouflaged, lying, fanged, diseased snake hiding this time not in elegant and sterile Japan but in the heart of the Western Church.
Another snake that needs his head caved in.
But fortunately, this fake, defeatist, Kingdom-shrinking church won’t need to be physically nuked. As even the memory of the Holy Spirit leaves it, said shuffling corpse will simply topple over and die, unmourned and forgotten with amazing swiftness.
Let the dead bury the dead.
