Read suggests considering choosing most officeholders by lot for single terms, in comparison with the current system, in which politicians and their partisans “compete to see which one can get himself in front of the most popular voter grab bag in order to stand foursquare for some people’s supposed right to other people’s income.”
At first, the idea seems shocking. After all, as Read noted, “Voting is deeply embedded in the democratic mores as a duty.” However, “any person who is conscious of our rapid drift toward the omnipotent state can hardly escape the suspicion that there may be a fault in our habitual way of looking at things.”
In particular, what motivates this thought experiment is that “If it be conceded that the role of government is to secure ‘certain unalienable rights, that among them are the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness,’ by what stretch of the imagination can this be achieved when we vote for those who are openly committed to unsecuring these rights,” with a focus on how it would reduce the vigor with which political abuses now invade our lives. Consider Read’s conclusions:
With nearly everyone conscious that only “ordinary citizens” were occupying political positions, the question of who should rule would lose its significance. Immediately, we would become acutely aware of the far more important question: What shall be the extent of the rule? That we would press for a severe limitation of the state seems almost self-evident.
In other words, instead of focusing on who can most effectively package their preferred violations of the Constitution, people would focus on the foundational constitutional question—what does government do better for us with our own resources than we could do ourselves—since only the very small number of things that pass this test could possibly improve the general welfare. The current bipartisan momentum toward ever-larger government would be reversed.
Election by Lot
If our rulers were chosen randomly, everyone would immediately demand strict restrictions on the power of the state.
That’s why elections will never be chosen by lot.
Might Men With Bulging Muscles
A Mighty Man will always be desired, to strip wealth and power and liberty from the Wrong Sort, and given to the Right Sort… however defined.
This is also why humanists – conservatives nor liberals – will never tolerate the return of Divine Law.
Might Men With Shining Halos
And finally: even with the successful rise of theonomy/Christian Reconstruction, the opportunity for tyranny will still remain, so long as political power is centralized in just a few hands, however pious and regardless of how many Bible verses are quoted by the Powers That Be.
Or how much fawning media coverage they get.
“Fawning media coverage? For Christian rulers? What universe do you live in?”
I grant, the concept is impossible within the 21st century.
New Lies for Old! New Lies for Old!
But, with the fall of the current Ruling Class – and no Ruling Class rules forever! – it’s possible that a future Ruling Class will have a taste for spiritual Godtalk and mystical links with the Divine.
Especially in an era with few military, bureaucratic or cultural levers to compel obedience from a fragmented society.
“No more Master Races… or Manifest Destiny… or State Security (either by checks, or by disappearing dissidents)… or World Revolution… or Imperial Power… or any Free World to speak of?”
“Nope. All those Humanistic Justifications for Power are dead and gone.”
“Time for Mystical Justifications for Power!”
After all, even Satan can quote scripture, and it was the Israelites, then a free people living under God’s Law and a decentralized Tribal Establishment, that cried out for a King to rule over them.
Even when explicitly told — by a prophet of God! — that said King would be an oppressor.
A Mindless Creator: Never Designed to be Worshiped, but Only to be Used
Too bad the Darwinians will never put their Random, Blind, Unintelligent Creator in charge of the process of government. They are infinitely too power-hungry and elitist for that.
After all, a truly Random Number Generator might not put Darwinians in the power chair.
Which means that their Unintelligent Creator-God was ever only meant to steal the place of the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob. And never meant to actually rule, or have any authority whatsoever outside of creating the universe and life and humanity (!!!)
The Unliving Random Noise God was only ever meant to drown out the Living God that Speaks.
And by shutting up the Defender of the Weak and the Poor and the Stranger, the Law-hating Darwinians — Right-wing or Left-wing — can do what they always wanted to do.
<Sidesteps the growing pools of blood on the sidewalk.>
<Plugs the nose, to avoid the stench of moral rot across the West.>
Hmmm…. Why would the Darwinians always be so very eager to attack and smash up the foundation of the Law, Truth, Reason, Beauty, Justice, and Mercy?
I suggest you look around the Darwinian society you live in, and decide for yourself.
Election by Lot? Perhaps…
In the meantime, the concept of Election by Lot (as opposed to a Random Number Generator) might be of some value to the Christian.
After all, men have been chosen by Lot in the Bible before… even with Divine approval.
The lot is cast into the lap, but its every decision is from the Lord. – Proverbs 16:33
The lot puts an end to quarrels and decides between powerful contenders. – Proverbs 18:18
And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for the Lord and the other lot for Azazel. – Leviticus 16:8
But the land shall be divided by lot. According to the names of the tribes of their fathers they shall inherit. – Numbers 23:55
You shall inherit the land by lot according to your clans. To a large tribe you shall give a large inheritance, and to a small tribe you shall give a small inheritance. Wherever the lot falls for anyone, that shall be his. According to the tribes of your fathers you shall inherit. – Numbers 35:54
In the morning therefore you shall be brought near by your tribes. And the tribe that the Lord takes by lot shall come near by clans. And the clan that the Lord takes shall come near by households. And the household that the Lord takes shall come near man by man. – Joshua 7:11
And they said to one another, “Come, let us cast lots, that we may know on whose account this evil has come upon us.” So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah. – Jonah 1:7
[….skipped other examples…]
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. – Luke 23:34
so they said to one another, “Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see whose it shall be.” This was to fulfill the Scripture which says, “They divided my garments among them, and for my clothing they cast lots.” So the soldiers did these things, – John 19:24
And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias, and he was numbered with the eleven apostles. – Acts 1:26
You have neither part nor lot in this matter, for your heart is not right before God. – Acts 8:21
Thing is, Randomness (to the extent that it even exists… which I strongly doubt) knows who her Maker is, and will obey Him, not the Darwinians.
And that’s why the Darwinians will never actually give their Random Number Generator God any real political authority.
Darwinians Licensed and Certified Professionals get to program it, and design the algorithms.
You know: like the totally unbiased media professionals and scientists, who have decided what you are to think and say and do.)
And this is exactly why freedom-loving Christians — not power’n’control Darwinian elitists — are the ones most likely to make random lots the basis of deciding who has political control.
Just make sure that it is physical lots that are drawn by human hands, and not some Certified Random Number generator, generously provided by Our Darwinian Masters.
