Quite an interesting fellow, Chamlers: not only did he reinvigorate the Scottish church and found his own denomination when his mainstream church got corrupted, but also set up an alternate, locally-based/church-based welfare system in lieu of the government-backed Poor Laws of yore.
This could be a very smart man to imitate, when the welfare state goes bust. To take responsibility for building up the poor is to gain leadership of the poor… and not only will this lead to fewer poor people (as they gain the attitude and skills needed to join the working-class middle-class), but good social skills as well, a better connection to the needs of your local community, and better insight on how to build your people up.
And that’s a big part of life.
