COVID-19: Medical Reality

Reality and The End of ‘Zero COVID-19’

Tom Woods: UK scientists: virus can’t be stopped, even with you know what

—<Quote begins>—

I’ll get to the UK in a minute. But first:

Last week I shared with you something I received from a listener in Iceland. It was looking as if Iceland, one of the world’s most heavily vaccinated countries, might retreat into the cycle of lockdowns and restrictions of 2020.

It’s not impossible that that could still happen.

But there was an interesting development over the weekend.

As Iceland had a day whose U.S. equivalent would have been 100,000 new cases, state epidemiologist Þórólfur Guðnason is now throwing up his hands.

He says he is disappointed that vaccination has not brought about herd immunity, and that the only approach now is to protect vulnerable groups and allow the virus to move through society.

“We really can not do anything else,” he says.

“We need to try to vaccinate and better protect those who are vulnerable, but let us tolerate the infection,” he adds. “We need to somehow navigate this way, and we are now in this, not to get too many serious illnesses so that the hospital system does not collapse, but still try to achieve this herd immunity by letting the virus somehow run.”

In the UK, scientists are now voicing a similar pessimism about herd immunity brought about by vaccines.

According to The Telegraph, “The delta variant has wrecked any chance of herd immunity, a panel of experts including the head of the Oxford vaccine team said as they called for an end to mass testing so Britain can start to live with Covid.

“Scientists,” the paper continued, “said it was time to accept that there was no way of stopping the virus spreading through the entire population, and monitoring people with mild symptoms was no longer helpful.

“Prof. Andrew Pollard, who led the Oxford vaccine team, said it was clear that the delta variant can infect people who have been vaccinated, which made herd immunity impossible to reach even with high vaccine uptake.”

“We don’t have anything that will stop transmission,” said Pollard, “so I think we are in a situation where herd immunity is not a possibility and I suspect the virus will throw up a new variant that is even better at infecting vaccinated individuals.”

Moreover, says the Telegraph, “Public Health England has shown that when vaccinated people catch the virus they have a similar viral load to unvaccinated individuals and may be as infectious.”

Paul Hunter, professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia and an expert in infectious diseases, added further that the obsession with “cases” needed to be abandoned: “We need to start moving away from just reporting infections, or just reporting positive cases admitted to hospital, to actually start reporting the number of people who are ill because of Covid. Otherwise we are going to be frightening ourselves with very high numbers that actually don’t translate into disease burden.”

What this means for government policy remains to be seen. But since the worst of the totalitarianism has occurred under regimes seeking “zero COVID,” and these scientists appear to believe such a thing is ridiculous, maybe it’s good news.

Another power-mad bureaucratic delusion bites the dust.

About time.

Tom Woods: What the Crazies Fear Most

—<Quote begins>—

The New York Times just ran a headline about a major study in North Carolina showing that “masks work” in school settings.

Buried in the article was this:

“Because North Carolina had a mask mandate for all K-12 schools, we could not compare masked schools to unmasked schools.”

Say what?

Without any unmasked schools, there’s no control group, and without a control group there’s no study!

Phil Kerpen makes a good point about all the hysteria aimed at kids these days. He points out that the 2009-10 swine flu was five times deadlier to kids than COVID. “But it didn’t hurt boomers,” he adds, “so it didn’t stoke an irrational fear/panic that disrupted kids’ lives indefinitely.”

Boom.

Meanwhile, Harvard’s Martin Kulldorff points out that there have been essentially zero COVID deaths in Sweden for about a month now, and there’s almost no masking going on there at all:

Speaking of Sweden, one thing the crazies have sought to avoid from the beginning was a control group. The downright lunacy that greeted Sweden’s 2020 decision to stick as close as possible to normal life was not the result of profound compassion and genuine concern for the well-being of Swedes. That’s the one thing we can know for certain it wasn’t.

What if the mad shutdown of the world was a terrible mistake with horrific consequences that wound up serving to health purpose at all?

That’s why they didn’t want Sweden to be a control group.

Neil Ferguson tried to scare the Swedes into locking down by predicting 96,000 deaths there by June if they didn’t. Well, they didn’t, and the actual figure by June turned out to be 4,000.

If everything we were urged to do in 2020 were justified, Sweden must surely have been the worst place on Earth, and a thousand times worse than the next country.

Instead, it came out number 39.

Likewise, the crazies don’t want control groups with student masking this fall. They want masks to take credit for falling numbers. That won’t work if numbers also fall in schools without masks, so they’re doing everything they can to keep such schools to a minimum.

If it’s all too crazy for you — and masks or not, most of these teachers are at war with you, and will be shaping your kids’ brains — I recommend the self-taught K-12 Ron Paul Curriculum, featuring courses by me.

But especially…

Our Betters are a rather repulsive group, if I may say so myself.

On the other hand… I am ashamed that Secular Sweden was the control group chosen by God to flick away all those worthless restrictions, and not America.

We need to reflect, and get to the root of our failure, why He passed over us and blessed some godless bunch with liberty and freedom instead.
