Hear this word, people of Israel, the word the Lord has spoken against you—against the whole family I brought up out of Egypt:
“You only have I chosen
of all the families of the earth;
therefore I will punish you
for all your sins.”
Do two walk together
Amos 3:1-6, New International Version
unless they have agreed to do so?
Does a lion roar in the thicket
when it has no prey?
Does it growl in its den
when it has caught nothing?
Does a bird swoop down to a trap on the ground
when no bait is there?
Does a trap spring up from the ground
if it has not caught anything?
When a trumpet sounds in a city,
do not the people tremble?
When disaster comes to a city,
has not the Lord caused it?
When you are chosen by God, you are held accountable by God:
more strictly accountable than the run-of-the-mill pagan.
If you are a leader, from fatherhood to manager to teacher,
you have a heavier moral weight than a follower carries.
And one way God’s people are punished for their evil,
is to have evil fall upon them.
Pain and suffering, caused by God.
Placed on the backs of His disobedient people.
Tread lightly: God watches, and God acts.
In time and on earth: and in the afterlife as well!
Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matthew 10:28, NIV
